Great new idea for working on the go
Thanks to colleague Stacy Spaulding for the tip on PortableApps. The site offers a wide range of software applications (free or shareware) that can be loaded onto a USB flash drive. As the site notes:
Applications include some class favorites, such as Filezilla, the Firefox browser and Audacity. You might also want to check into Kompozer, a free HTML editor (like Dreamweaver) and GIMP (offers many of the features of PhotoShop).
Now you can carry your favorite computer programs along with all of your bookmarks, settings, email and more with you. Use them on any Windows computer. All without leaving any personal data behind.

A Fairy-y Use Tale
Here's a clever video that explains the concept of fair use using snippets of Disney films.
Video to accompany This American Life's "Meet the Pros"
If you'd like to watch the Nike commercial that is discussed in the TAL episode we began listening to in class, you can find it here. You can also download the TAL episode at the iTunes store for under a dollar.

Advice for young journalists
What do you journalists need to do/read/think about? Some good discussion this week, starting with Paul Bradshaw’s post, “How to be a journalism student.” Mindy McAdams follows up on that post with “More advice for (young) journalists,” and lots of readers join the discussion. Whatever your final opinion on the various bits of advice offered, it all makes for good reading.
